You may also want to ask whether you've used too many quick patches to maintain it and it is time to do some more thorough maintenance.

That's a good point, inertia impacts us programmers as well. I agree, it is definitely rewarding when I complete a feature or fix a bug!

I try to break things down into smaller chunks to help reduce the barriers to those daunting tasks. But I can still be hindered by inertia if I don't get the ball rolling. I like the todo-list of 30-minute, bite-sized, tasks...great way to keep moving.

Thanks for the comment, Morgan!

I think what I liked about this article was that programmers get inertia too. I try to have something to cross off my list every 30 minutes. Even if that entails no more than investigating a new topic that has sprung up during refactoring; it may be a necessary function to further development.

It's funny that sometimes programming can seem daunting, but once the swing comes back, it's as rewarding as ever! :)

Thanks Traci! Yeah, definitely not the easiest behavior, but I can see the potential gains from doing it intentionally.

Good post. One of our management team group norms is to assume good intent. It's a learned behavior, but definitely worth the mental and emotional investment.

Do waiters aspire to be doctors?

Just messing with you.

Great take on the subject, I like it.

Also.. any chance you get make it so your articles don't get cut off in my RSS reader? All I get is like two sentences and an ellipsis with a link to 'View article'.

Thank Kyle.

I read "The Language of Success" as part of book club this year. Great book, and definitely reinforces some of the topics from this book as well.

I could write a whole other book review on that book, but I think that language of success should be very-nearly-required reading for us at SEP. We do SO much of this without even thinking about it.

I wholeheartedly agree with all your points.

And if you haven't read "The Language of Success" (another of his books), I highly recommend that one as well.
